Musings…today

January 24, 2009

Funny, I just realized that I always tend to write something in this blog when the weather is cold. Haven’t you noticed that? Well, today’s addition is brought about by the same circumstance – cold weather. I guess the warm weather takes me far away from my computer enough to write about anything.

Cold weather, like the one we are having here in Texas today, tends to keep people inside their homes. This is most likely a bad day for those who are trying to lose weight by dieting. Cold weather almost always increases one’s appetite causing refrigerators to be raided out until they are empty.

Cold weather also tends to keep people together more so than warm weather. This becomes so conducive to baby making (or practicing baby making). We’ll know in a few weeks when women start having morning sickness as a consequence of cold weather activities. Population growth is going to result from this, if it doesn’t already.

As for me, taking pictures outside (for a short time) when it is cold takes my mind off those two activities I have mentioned above. Plus, there are not a lot of people in the way of my picture taking since they are all inside their cozy homes doing whatever. Also, I don’t want to add to the population growth since I already did my share a long time ago.

Whoops, here I am (again).

The rash of very cold days this winter has me thinking about how to dress up to the weather. Yesterday I went to REI to buy a balaclava (mask) for winter. I read from a running magazine that running in the cold weather is very taxing to your lungs. The low moisture, low temperature of the cold air eventually would produce a (hacking?) cough. One way to counter this, they suggest, is to wear a mask which would allow you to warm the air that is about to be inhaled. I have yet to try this.

I ran outside today (not using my newly acquired mask) when it was 37 degrees F and covered eight miles in the process. I could have gone for more but I was running out of time- I had errands to do. This time I did it in a smaller park so I can afford accessibility to my car within a minute or two. This was in case I could not stand running in the cold. I am just a wuzz, that’s why.

As a warm-blooded individual, I didn’t think I could do anything in this weather. If I did go running, it would be such a workout just getting my joints loosened up -everyone would be able to hear me creaking from a mile away. But this respite from running also allowed me to drive around the place to take pictures. I have attached a few below:

will be cold tomorrow…

January 4, 2009

The forecast for tomorrow morning (Jan 4th) will be 45 deg F compared to today’s comfortable 84 deg F. I am supposed to do a long run tomorrow morning but I think I might have to postpone it or do it using my treadmill again like I did last weekend. The treadmill idea, though,  has a low probability because I might not want to get up from my bed. Also, I have a slight sinus allergy as I am typing this and I don’t think running in the cold (or running at all) would help my situation; if not, it would only worsen it. Can you imagine me running while my nose is also fast “running”? I would feel sorry for those running behind me – it would be slippery trail for them. I have already taken my medication a few hours ago and it has not taken effect yet. I hope it wasn’t an expired medication I took.

Should I or should I not? That would be the question. I have bought goos for tomorrow’s anticipated run, I have my small spare phone charged up, I have borrowed cash from my wife, and I have laid out the clothes I am going to wear tomorrow . I must be ready to run just in case. But if worst comes to worst, do you know what I am going to do?  I would just keep the money.

Uneventful day.. Jan 2nd

Campion Trails

Life yesterday was uneventful. I had to go to work for a full 8 hours yet there was enough work for only 5.5 hrs of that. After all my work was done, I had to sit there, along with my coworkers, not doing anything since vacations and personal time can only be taken at 4 or 8-hour increments. I had to approach my supervisor if she wanted to sit with me for me to go over a process that used to be my responsibility that she will now be taking over. She requested a typed set of procedures which I happily obliged since I was going to be doing something. With the procedures typed, I submitted it to the supervisor for her to just go over when she had the time. I guess I must have written it very simply because she approached me afterwards commenting that the procedures were actually straightforward and because she did not have any questions needing clarification. Shortly after that, my eight hours at work was up.

I didn’t waste any time getting out of the office and on to the restroom for a quick change of clothes. It was 72 degrees (F) outside and just the perfect weather to go running. I popped clif bloks while I was driving on my way to the running trail and hydrated myself enough before I started the run. I was so excited to start my run that I forgot  the goo that I was planning take for the second hour of the run. That said, I depended solely on those clif bloks I had in the car for almost two hours of running – I had no choice. What a life! I was so glad to finally see my car after all that running because my water bottle was running out of water as well. I had a few water bottles in my “aid station” – my car- which I easily finished to quench my dying thirst. So that’s that my friends.

Happy New Year!!

non-sequitur

(Just for laughs.)

I went to bed late last night after watching 4 movies from blockbusters. The movies were only rented overnight that was why there was an urgent need to finish watching them. They had to be returned today or else their rental fees would double up.

This morning I got up hoping that I could free away from the house to go running for a few hours. Again, that didn’t happen. The idea hit a snag before I could slip out of the house hehe – my boss woke up! The farthest I have gone by myself today was to the supermarket to buy stuff for her and to return the movies we watched last night.

In the afternoon, my wife had shopping in mind so I went with her wherever she wanted to go which allowed me to check on point-and-shoot cameras that are small enough to take with me on my runs. I was not able to check on a lot, though, since the few places we went to carried only limited makes and models of cameras. I might have to go to places like Circuit City or Best Buy or Frys for a more varied selection.

It will be seventy degrees when I get off work tomorrow and it will be a good time to go for a run. I hope therefore I am ( or will be?).

heal thyself..

December 31, 2008

I am letting myself heal from all that running. Two days max of rest then it’s crying time again hehe. It takes that much time for me to replenish the energy I consumed during the last run. The wife cooked some beans last night – this could make an interesting run-it will be just like running on “clouds”.

Goo vs Lactose intolerance

December 31, 2008

I finally tried goo during my (treadmill) run last Sunday (it was thirty four degrees outside that’s why the treadmill). I was amazed on the kind of boost effect I got after taking one of those goos (or gu?). I logged 16 miles on the treadmill and decided to try out the goo for each hour spent. I was very confident that if my system ever reacts adversely to the goo ( I am lactose intolerant), I can always find a nice comfortable and clean bathroom in my house. I used up two of those in the process,  the first on the second hour and the other on the third hour, and several days later – still no reaction. My lactose intolerance must be waning, but this remains to be seen. I don’t want to get comfortable with the idea that can always backfire. Can you imagine if I get sick in the stomach using thoses goo(s or gu?) while on a marathon run? It’ll be a very memorable run – running from one porta potty to the next all the way to the finish line!

One thing to note – the goos (or gu?) are very light to carry compared to the MCD egg mcmuffin I took with me during the marathon. (How is goo spelled anyway??)

Been draggin’…

December 27, 2008

I woke up at 3 am this morning and could not get back to sleep. After which I made coffee and sat in front of the computer. I didn’t really do anything productive except just messed around with my old photos by converting them to black and whites. It’s the exact same thing (sat in front of the computer) I did last night as well, but last night’s photos were hdrs. I must have vented my frustrations of not being able to run yesterday to doing unproductive stuff like digital photo processing.
I might just as well show you guys some of the work I did that way I can justify the time I wasted in front of the computer. More can be found at this website.

Snagged again

December 27, 2008

Had to replace the car battery which took more than an hour for the whole process – taking it out from the car, taking it to the car parts store, bringing it home, and installing it. Along with it, I included going to Barnes and Nobles for coffee and included perusing some of their magazines. By the time I was done with everything, it was already dark. No use running then since the running trail closes when it gets dark. What a bummer!
I had to tell my boss of my plan to run this weekend so she’ll not come up with anything that will throw me off my plans again. What a life, huh?
